Fly Girls: How Five Daring Women Defied All Odds and Made Aviation History by Keith O’Brien

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love aviation history and all things female aviators, so I was jazzed to discover this book. It is the first one I have read about airplane racing, and it is a very fascinating topic. I really enjoyed learning so much history and hearing about these amazing women who wouldn’t let a bunch of grumpy men keep them on the ground.

It was great to learn about some of the women who flew alongside Amelia Earhart, and how much these women all supported each other and developed friendships. Amelia being described as “the most famous, but not necessarily the most skilled” is quite accurate, as some of these stories highlight the records that the other women broke – and they far surpassed Amelia’s accomplishments. But they all contributed to women’s rights, pushing forward through intense backlash and adversity. These women fought for more than just the right to race – and they accomplished so much both in the sky and on the ground.
